general info

Klimis Mastoridis, as Chairman of alterVision, typography & visual communication ltd, General director of Typophilia Publishing
and Director of the University of Macedonia Press has in the past thirty five years produced and supervised many print, editorial and information design projects,
having acted as designer, editor and publisher as well as typographic consultant to government bodies and large private firms.
He has played a leading role in Greek typographic education and research, through writing, publishing an international journal, and organising major conferences.
He is the only Greek among the small group of PhD holders in the field of Typography & Graphic Communication.

Klimis Mastoridis studied printing & publishing, small offset and reprographics, and book design at the London College of Printing.
On completion of a postgraduate course in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading he undertook research,
which led to his PhD degree with the thesis: "Casting the Greek Newspaper: a study of the morphology of the 'ephemeris' from its origins
until the introduction of mechanical setting".

He is a Fellow of the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD), of the Institute of Paper, Printing and Publishing (IP3), UK,
and member of several academic societies relating to graphic communication, design and the history of printing.
He has participated in international conferences in Greece and abroad and was responsible for the academic part
of the first-ever international conference about typography held in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1992 (DIDOT Programme).
He has addressed postgraduate students at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and has taught in various colleges on the subject of typography.

Klimis ran his own bookshop-publishing house in Thessaloniki from 1977 till 1997.
In 1987 he established the publishing house Typophilia specializing in typographic and printing bibliography.
He is also co-founder of alterVision, typography & visual communication ltd, a major design agency in Greece, and was its Chairman until 2009.

In 1998 he proposed the establishment of the Publishing Mechanism of the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki on EEC funds;
he directed the project becoming the head of the PMUOM. In June 2001 the governing body of the University of Macedonia decided
to establish the University of Macedonia Press to which KM was elected director until his resignation in July 2007.

Klimis has designed and edited a large number of books, journals and ephemera and has contributed to many visual
and brand identity development projects as well as information design projects for major companies and institutions.

He has published many articles about typography and is the author of the books Reproduction and printing issues (Thessaloniki, 1988, 1993, 1997)
and Casting the Greek newspaper (Thessaloniki, 1999). Since 1998 he edits and publishes the journal Hyphen: a typographic forum,
one of the very few academic journals on typography published worldwide.

Klimis Mastoridis is the initiator of the idea for the International Conference on Typography and Visual Communication (ICTVC);
this major event was until 2007 held at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki and was organized by the University of Macedonia Press
in cooperation with alterVision and other institutes and companies involved in the field of typography, design and visual communication.

His contribution, in an academic and practical level, to the advancement of the typographic arts field in Greece has been highly praised
in a number of published presentations and interviews (radio, TV and magazines) during the last twenty years.

Klimis is currently Professor of Typography & Graphic Communication and responsible for the programmes BA in Graphic Communication
and MA in Digital Art & Design at the University of Nicosia, where he also held the position of Head of the Department of Design & Multimedia, from its establishment (2008) to 2014.

5th ICTVC ICTVC is established worldwide as a major event that explores the world of typography and visual communication. Since its inception in 2002, people from diverse fields and different disciplines with a passion for visual language research, education, and practice, contribute to the conference. ICTVC attracts speakers and delegates on an international scale, and from a wide range of disciplines related to typography and design. The high quality of presentations is a hallmark of the conference. This time the conference theme is "against lethe..."; social, economic, political, cultural, and environmental issues that affect us all demand a new way of thinking. However, as we look forward we should not forget the lessons of the past. What has been the role of visual language against forgetting till now and what may happen in the future? We would like to invite you to submit your proposals for 30 minute lectures or 20 minute presentations-reports for the main conference and the education strand, and 20 minute presentations for the Design MG?İditerranG?İe strand.* The 5th ICTVC will take place from 6 to 8 June 2013 in Nicosia, Cyprus, on the campus of the University of Nicosia. A series of workshops will precede the conference, and exhibitions will run for the duration of the week. * please send your files/proposals to papers2013@ictvc.org until 15 December 2012.
